2017 FOJT Climb Smart: Educating New Climbers About Tribes & Cultural Resources

The climbing community and American Indian tribes have many overlapping interests in protecting public lands however, both historical conflict and cultural differences have posed challenges to building working relationships between these groups. NativesOutdoors worked with Friends of Joshua Tree President, Kenji Haroutunian, to create a presence of local tribes & educational resources at the 2017 Climb Smart Event in Joshua Tree National Park. This event is focused on education of climbers who are looking to take their sport outdoors giving them the tools to both climb safely, reduce impact, and now understanding and respecting tribes & cultural resources.
